White's queen's knight defended his K4(e4) pawn and threatened Black's Q4(d5) pawn.
Black now opens up the board, his Queen's Pawn giving up the centre to start an exchange by removing White's KP on K5(e4). The usual move, it eases his potential development difficulties. B-Alt.
