PHILIDORE'S LEGACY (or Philidor's Mate)
So called in honour of Andre Danican Philidor (the greatest player of the 18th century) although in fact much older. This ingenious combined attack occurs frequently from positions such as that shown (left), and involves a sacrifice (usually of a Queen) in the penultimate move whereby the King is smothered by his own pieces - thus it is also a Smothered Mate.
