White's KKt contested for control of the two dark centre squares by countering Black's QKt influence.
Black moves his King's Pawn a single square to K3(e3) rather than (better) advance it all the way to rejoin the "Epine Dorsale". Another option 2..P-Q4 can lead to the Centre Counter Game. B-Alt.
