Leaving the "Épine Dorsale", White sets his (her) QBPawn out one square to support 4.P-Q4 for a strong pawn centre, and frees a Q-side path for his queen. Nowadays Ponziani's Opg. is thought too slow for White. Black's best practical answer lies in 3..Kt-B3 or 3..P-KB4!? (a reversed Vienna). W-Alt.
