The Close Variation
Black sought Q5(d4) control for a Q-side counter.
White knows he will need complete control of his Q4(d4) for a strong centre but develops his Queen's Knight first, deciding to defer the struggle for the centre until the middlegame. Positional rather than sharp, the Closed Sicilian can suit novices. W-Alt.
