Describes a position where one player (but not both) would be at a disadvantage if having to move. Some (but not all) authorities call it a zugzwang (a term that more properly describes a position where whoever has the move would be at a disadvantage).

The position shown is a squeeze. If Black has to move, the pawn is soon promoted. But White having to move is at no disadvantage, as a "waiting move" B-Q3(d3) maintains the squeeze so that White wins the game.
