White adopted the Philidor Variation, pushing his QBPawn out to support a planned 4.P-Q4.
Black with a good gambit response advances his Queen's Pawn to the centre to attack White's light bishop and KP. English player William Lewis published his gambit analysis in 1834. B-Alt.
