THE CARO-KANN DEFENCE
White attacked Q5+KB5 and freed his (her) KB and Q diagonals, hoping to occupy the centre fully.
Black leaves the "Épine Dorsale" for the semi-open Caro-Kann to avoid an Open Game (P-K4 by both sides). Specifically he/she intends 2..P-Q4 to free the light QB (often difficult in other side defences) and attack any White B-QB4, while avoiding a 3.PxP..QxP exchange. Suits defensive minded players. B-Alt.
