Black pushes his King's Pawn one square, frees his KB+Q and supports a potential P-Q4, in a lesser (and usually intermediate) defence so called because it may lead to the French, to the Dutch (avoiding the Staunton G.), to one of the Indian Defences (- see example -), or to an independent position.
