In chess, a game opening 1.P-Q4 (d4) (left) is generally termed:-
(i) If Black replies 1..P-Q4 (d5) (ie. close opening), then either as the Queen's Gambit (qv.) when played, or else as a Queen's Pawn Game (qv.) with an occasional further description such as the Colle System (qv.), or:
(ii) if Black does not so reply, then mainly as the Dutch Defence (qv.), the Budapest Defence (qv.) or else by the particular Queen's Pawn Side Defence (usually one of the Indian Defences qv.) adopted by Black.
