White aims to create an eventual centre of Q4+K4 pawns coupled with Q-side pressure via the QB file.
Black adopts a semi-closed reply (at times called the Old Indian Defence) that usually becomes the Pirc Def., setting his Queen's Pawn on Q3(d6) to give White the centre but deter a 2.P-K4.., 3.P-K5 attack against a planned 2..Kt-KB3. He also frees his QB for a potential 2.Kt-KB3..B-KKt5 pin. B-Alt.
