Black's KP challenged White's QP directly with a dubious gambit so as to open the game up.
White sets his King's Pawn on K3(e3) defending his QP. Perfectly sound but passive, declining the gambit (although 2.PxP was best to limit Black's initiatives). Usually leads to the Exchange line of the French Defence. W-Alt.
