THE ZUKERTORT (to RETI) OPENING
White develops a non-committal King's Knight to control Q4+K5(d4+e5), delaying any centre structure to see Black's intentions before advancing pawns. The Zukertort (a flank opening), fourth most popular championship opening move, deters 1..P-K4 but otherwise allows Black to occupy the centre (for a target for White to attack). Best replies are 1..P-Q4 (for a Reti) or an "Indian" 1..Kt-KB3. W-Alt.
