OSCARS LISTS: "BEST" FILMS in the ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Before its present description of 'Best Picture' (from 1962) the award had been titled 'Outstanding Picture' (1927/28-1928/9), then 'Outstanding Production' (1929/30-1940), 'Outstanding Motion Picture' (1941-1943) and 'Best Motion Picture' (1944-1961).
In the early years the award went to the production company or studio that produced the winning film, but since 1951 the award has been given to the actual producers credited on the film.
