BARCZA SYSTEM

Board Position
Pronounced "Bartsa", this system is a flank opening from the "Hypermodern School" related to the Reti and first worked out by Gedeon Barcza (1911-86), a Hungarian IGM and mathematician. Board Position
White plays 1.Kt-KB3, 2.P-KKt3, 3.B-Kt2, 4.0-0 (and sometimes even 5.R-K1), withholding either P-QB4 or P-Q4 to delay centre occupation until Black's defensive intentions become clearer. Main branches follow 1..P-Q4 (left) or 1..Kt-KB3 (right).
The system allows White to set a King's Indian Attack formation or transpose into QGD or KID variants, the English, the Dutch or allied lines of a QPG. It also prevents Black playing a Bogo-Indian, thus avoiding the Catalan.
