THE FRENCH DEFENCE
White sought centre control, opening KB+Q paths.
Black quits the "Dorsal Fin" for the subtle French Defence (third most popular, and likely to be soon attacked). He (she) blocks any White KB strike at KB2(f7) and aids a 2..P-Q4, 3..Kt-KB3 counter (to avoid 3.PxP..QxP exposure but invite 3.P-K5) so as to then undermine the base of White's centre by ..P-QB4, set for a later Q-side pawn advance. B-Alt.
