White's king's knight attacked Black's KP, deterred 2..Q-R5 and contested Q4(d4) to enable 3.P-Q4.
Black leaves the "Épine Dorsale" for Petroff's Defence where his King's Knight development to KB3(f6) counter-attacks White's KP at once to simplify the position in the centre. The move also avoids facing Scotch and Ruy Lopez lines. B-Alt.
